The Galileo Open Air Cinema
This year The Galileo Open Air Cinema is continuing its
expanded schedule with a weekly Friday and bi-weekly Saturday screening at some
of the Cape’s historic, scenic and all-round fabulous wine estates and
inner-city gems. During the school holidays, special Family Sunday screenings
will take place at Kelvin Grove in Newlands.
This year, the fabulous film fest will also feature a
special selection of flicks at various chosen locations around the Mother City
every Friday night. On the first Friday of the month, movies will be shown at
The Castle; second Fridays will be screened at Central Park in Century City,
third Fridays will be held at the Fedisa Rooftop in the CBD, fourth Fridays
will play at Meerendal Wine Estate in Durbanville and the fifth Fridays of
December and March will be located at the Noordhoek Common.
Twice a month, until April 2017, the film festival will
showcase romance films, cinematic classics, action flicks and award-winning,
toe-tapping musicals at one of 13 Winelands destinations on Saturday nights:
Knorhoek, Lourensford, Antonij Rupert, Warwick, Rhebokskloof, Rustenberg,
Nederburg, Vergenoegd, Muldersvlei, Uitkyk, Boschendal, Allée Bleue and
Blaauwklippen.
These weekend cinema nights make for a perfect romantic
first date, date night with the spouse or even a relaxing evening out with the
family. Laze beneath the stars surrounded by historic vineyards and towering
mountain ranges on lush lawns in the Cape Winelands, or discover truly
remarkable locations dotted around our pretty city.
Movie-goers can gain entrance to the venues from 6pm onwards
on Fridays, 5pm onwards on Saturdays, and 4pm on Sundays (proof of ticket
purchase is required) and grab a bite to eat from the on-site vendors. The list
of food stalls will vary according to the venue, and details of who will be
present can be found on Thegalileo.co.za under each venue's page; be aware that
only cash will be accepted as no card facilities are available.
Please note that guests will not be allowed to bring any
alcohol from home into the venue.
The movies start just after sunset, between 7:45pm and
8:30pm; it's best to get there early to secure prime viewing spots. Chairs and
backrests from home are not allowed into the movie area, but backrests and
blankets are available for rent at the venue if you haven’t already booked them
with your ticket.
